Beyaz Lawsuit

Beyaz LawsuitIf you are currently taking birth control medication, be advised: the side effects of Beyaz and other contraceptives containing drospirenone have been linked to an increased risk of serious, life-threatening injuries. You may be entitled to compensation by filing a Beyaz lawsuit if you have suffered from a heart attack, stroke, blood clot, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or other serious side effect.

Beyaz Blood Clot Update 12/9/11: An independent advisory panel to the FDA has recommended that all birth control products containing the hormone drospirenone should have their labels updated to include warnings about blood clots. The panel’s recommendation was based on new data suggesting that the popular contraceptives may put women at a higher risk for dangerous blood clots than older forms of birth control. What is Beyaz?

Beyaz (drospirenone / ethinyl estradiol / levomefolate) is an FDA-approved birth control medication used to:

  • prevent pregnancy;
  • provide a daily dose of folate supplementation, which is recommended for women in their reproductive years;
  • treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD);
  • treat moderate acne in females age 14 and over who have started their menstrual cycle.

Just like YAZ and Yasmin, Beyaz’s active ingredients are drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, which prevent pregnancy by altering the lining of the uterus and cervix. This makes it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg and for the fertilized egg to reach the uterus. However, also like Yasmin and YAZ, Beyaz has been reported to be the cause of serious side effects which could be fatal or cause permanent damage.

Beyaz Side Effects

The drospirenone contained in Beyaz helps suppress the secretion of the hormones that regulate the body’s water and electrolytes. Drospirenone may cause higher potassium levels, which can lead to side effects including:

  • Blood Clots
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Stroke
  • Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA)
  • Heart Attack
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Gallbladder Disease / Injury (cholecystitis)
  • Gallbladder Removal (cholecystectomy)
  • Death

Drospirenone Birth Control Pills

In addition to Beyaz, other potentially harmful birth control products containing drospirenone include:

  • YAZ (generics: Gianvi, Loryna)
  • Yasmin (generics: Ocella, Syeda, Zarah)
  • Safyral

Many times, when a woman has suffered from an acute medical event such as a blood clot or stroke after taking Beyaz, she may not be aware that the medication was responsible for her condition. Doctors and healthcare professionals may also be unaware of the connection. However, the Beyaz lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP can help guide you through the process of determining whether your use of Beyaz has contributed to the adverse event you suffered.
